Starfire looks so smooth there! Great job, and I love the highlights. Very nice.

Thanks for your comments !
For starfire i think the base need more work, i'm not happy with it yet.

But for today here are some treasure chests !
[Edit] : Those are some old paints (2 or 3 years ago i think), as i'm waiting for the SDE Forgotten king arrival (in may i think :'( ), i'll paint the new treasure chests in a better way [/Edit]

Starfire looks fantastic, love how you've done the light direction on him. The base looks cool to me too!

Noice Starfire! You magnificient bastard!

The problem with the base is that it doesn't have the same type of lightning as the dragon.
It is just full lit from all angles where SF has obvious light and shadow sides.
Maybe you could add some dark blue shadows?

It's not easy though... If I'm seeing it correctly SF is lit mostly from above. And as the stones doesn't have a visible bottom you can't really give them "under" shadows like on the dragon.
Maybe just choose a direction and paint some drop shadows?

Yes Gobelins-King you're right, the base on the picture was just a quick dry-brushed stone work, black/grey/white, there wasn't the dark blue (Prince august's "Bleu sali foncé") i used in the shadows of starfire.

I'm currently adding similar shadows to the base. I think i will post some pics of the current wip in the morning with the "stone" work done with a better angle/better background.

In the first place i was thinking to add some "fire effects" in the paving's cracks, but the more i think of it the more it seems to be difficult due to the stones attached to starfire's pillar. I'm still not shure if i'll try this.

Here are some better pics. The base is still a WIP.

I've exagerated the shadows as it's a mini used for play, i wanted the contrasts to be clear even from above (as it will mostly be seen from above like in the first picture).

Starfire is a "him". ;)

But the improvements to the base definitely helped.

I have finally finished the Khador army i was commissioned for ... so i'm back with some more SDE WIP.

As i've finished Starfire, i've decided to paint the dragon spawnpoint, and dragonlings will come after that
It's the first time i try to paint crystals, so i do it slowly step by step.

The two following pics are the first layer of blue designed to start the highlight /shades. None of them are done to the "max" (white/black), but i'm pretty happy with the results so far !

So far so good. Definitely a way too "soft" look as is, but WIP I know...

Picture of finished Starfire? Or is it similar to the above picture?

Remember that there will be resculpts of those minis. If mine weren't already painted I would wait. :)

You DO realize there's ~1½ year wait? ;)

I do yes, but judging with the "poor quality" pics i have seen for now, i prefer the actual spawning point (and most of the actuals kobols )
But maybe it's just because i didn't see a "good" picture of them yet ;)

For starfire i'll try to put better pictures here as soon as i'll build a lightbox. Lights in my little appartment aren't that great , so taking good pics with a phone is a nightmare :p
I've improved his base a little bit and added some painted flocage to hide the "glued" section of the base and make it look a little more natural.

I'll try to finish the crystal tonight, and post some pics here !

Some tests of the new lightbox set !
The colors are much better now, i think i still lost a little contrast in the whites, but it's much better than the previous pics :p

I think i'm getting better with my GF's camera and my improvised lightbox. This time the colors are right !

Spended a lot of time on the cristal's highlight this night, i think most of them are done.
I'm still not happy with the shaddows and i think i'll work on them again tomorrow night (maybe i'll try that dotting technique we talk about in AegisArising's topic)

Feel free to tell me if you think i must put more lights on some zones or if you think some lights are painted wrong. I'm trying to get the cristal the more convincing i can.
I'm thinking on putting some gloss varnish on the edges that recieved an highlith "pushed to the white" but i'n not sure how it will look ...

Well, it looks very nice and if this is the final look noone would ever complain... but I think it could achieve a more crystal/glass like look.
Notice how it's built up of facets? Each of these facets should have a higher contrast, fade from deep dark to almost white within each facet.

Not the best example, but still, see how on some facets it goes from dark to light?
The thing is you want it to look like a shiny transparent crystal, not just a sharp rock.
The high contrast is important to achieve the crystal look.

You're right i should have covered a greater zone doing the highlights, not just lighting the edges of the facets.
The dark blue will be shaded to black, i just didn't do properly the shades for the moment.

Thanks for the advice ! :D

Here are some more hilights on the front, i've tried to use GK's advice to make the facets more "shiny" by playing ont the contrasts between them.
Some shadow are still too "blue" because, i didn't darken them with black them.

Let me know what you think of the changes !
Looking at the picture i think i could add some more higlights on the bottom left corner of the "top" facet.
