Hello! I acquired a half-assembled box of SDE, and next thing I know I'm painting figs again. A few decades ago it was all enamel paint on metal, so I'm having to re-learn everything, but totally loving these sculptures. I've really enjoyed seeing everyone's work, so thought I'd post mine.

Rex. He was a fun one. You can hardly tell where the arm shattered after I dropped him on the floor.

Starfire. Kind of a "standard" color scheme, but with a bit of bronze mixed in on the wings and underscales. The arm is floating - this was before I learned how to dunk the models in hot water to re-adjust them (*cough* Rock Gut *cough*).

The SDE model chests are amazing. And these treasure box sculpts are great too:

Welcome back to the world of painting minis!

I don't know if you are interested in C&C but here it goes:
I can't help but notice the colors seem a little "dirty". I can think of two reasons for this.

Either you are using black as basecolor. Imo black is a harder color to work with than white as it will shine through a thin layer of paint, thus giving a dirty look. White base color gives a more clean and bright look.

Or maybe you are using black mixed with the main colors to achieve shadows. If this is the case be careful to only apply the paint in the actual folds on the figure.
A good example is the dragon to the left. He has dark around his eyes and under his arms. But he also has some random dark ON his arm.

tl;dr
Keep it up! Nobody looks at the minis while you are playing anyway ;)

Thanks for the welcome back. C&C are more than welcome, so thanks for the comments. (Your figs are unbelievably awesome, BTW).

You are correct for the monsters - I used a black spray primer, and a few somewhat-unsuccessful experiments with Black Wash (especially diluted, which turned out patchy), mostly in the interest of cutting down the painting time. Rex was also primed in black, but he got quite a few more coats of color .

The heroes were hand-primed in white, no washes, so came out cleaner and brighter (for gameplay, they do stand out against the monsters, so that's good).
I used the paints undiluted, so they went on a little think. Kind of gives them a "Van Gogh" impressionist style ;) . I found the larger Angry Bear to be much easier to work with.

Turtles! These guys were fun to paint.
I decided to paint in some crystals on the spawn points.
I kept the rocktops to a cool green-blue color scheme to contrast well with the red/yellow kobolds.

Some close-ups:

For the shells, I added 1 to 6 stars to help keep track of which shell was which.

For the spawn points, I tried to do a Jade or Machalite type of rock.

The Slowpokes have my first attempt at OSL, with a yellow glow on the right side.

Your turtle look like Expressionistic painting....kind neat that way.

Thanks, I do like the style, although in truth it has more to do with fading eyesight and a frayed 10/0 brush. :) But here's an "Expressionist" (or possibly post-impressionist) RockGut for you:

and my first attempt at airbrushing, to try a nice smooth look:

I love your style, very distinct. they almost look like 2d paintings on white paper. My favorites are the Machalite tone and the turtles. Great job!

I almost feel it's a shame you used airbrush for the gels when your style is so cool and unique.

I really love this, I haven't ever seen miniatures painted in this way and it really works with the style of the minis. The 'Jade' rocktop spawner almost looks like a canvas I could hang it on the wall.
