So I really like board games with cool minis. Two of the board games that I’ve spent the most time playing are Kingdom Death: Monster and Super Dungeon Explore! Both are great games with fantastic minis- although the tones each use could hardly be farther apart.

The developers of these games know each other, and When both games went to Kickstarter, they took the opportunity to do a cool cross over. So means that we got a really cute chibi of the Twilight Knight.

She makes a great mini, and I’d have been happy to leave it off there, but the fluff on her card implies that if those super cute Super Dungeon characters go into the Nether Rift in their seting, they end up in the brutal and bloody hell world of Kingdom Death.

So I got to thinking about this, and decided that I really needed to expand on this idea of the cute little chibis on the Planes of Faces.

Yes, these are all playable, and I'm going to continue to create Chibi versions of Kingdom Death monsters.

That's amazing. Fantastic paint job and the face base is perfect. Can't wait to see what you do next. An entire chibi kingdom death set is going to be awesome.

We've started playing with the chibi set. After the initial white lion, we felt it was necessary to do the Candy and Cola scenario immediately. So Candy is totally part of the settlement now.

How do make the bases? Sure, I'll share:

- You need Oyumaru or CMON's InstaMold. They're the same stuff, but Instamold is eternally out of stock, while Oyumaru can be bought from overseas, or even through Amazon. It becomes soft like putty in boiling water, then hardens as it cools, so you can make molds of different things.

- You also need Apoxie Sculpt (it works like green stuff, but with a thinner grain and less polarity), I also use green stuff mixed in sometimes (I just prefer the mix as a sculpting medium- I find I can get smoother results with it).

You don't want to sculpt the whole base from square one- that would take forever. Instead, just make a few faces and make molds of those with the instamold. You could even use faces of some of your existing minis or bits (I did hide the twilight knight's face somewhere). The Apoxie sculpt will fill the molds nicely, and also it will give you just the right kinds of inconsistencies to make it look like it is actually rock. Plus, if you need to cut into it, pure apoxie sculpt breaks in the right shapes (like slate).

Another good source for faces is toys. For chibi faces like this, I like to turn to my daughter's collection of Disney Princess Barbies. Elsa and Anna both have terrific faces for chibi basing. The largest face in the back belonged to a Jessie doll (from Toy Story).

After you've made molds, mix aposie sculpt and cast them. Do that over and over until you've got a large pile of faces. I glued the larger faces onto the back- I used cork board to hold them in place at the right angles, and then filled in the area with more apoxie sculpt (I used cork board as a sculpting tool to create the "broken stone texture" at the back.

For the small mix some apoxie sculpt and spread it across the base and press the faces into it. After you've got them all in the right spots, go back and smooth out the transitions from face to face- basically like gap filling.

Well, that's what it is. The minis here aren't very converted- the Twilight Knight is unchanged, while the lion just has his head tilted and some green stuff to make his hands.

This whole concept is amazing.

I was interested in playing kingdom death, however my girlfriend is not big on horror so a lot of the models were unappealing to her and she wasn't interested in playing. I'm not really sure why I didn't think of subbing out for SDE minis, but I'm so glad that you did.

Have you done any other monsters yet?

YES, I have done other monsters.

But I don't have pictures just yet.

I'm making a call on each monster to determine just how much I need to convert them. Obviously the more humanoid ones (Butcher, Kingsman, Tyrant etc) need to be replaced with chibi minis. On the other hand, some of the larger monsters have such distorted anatomy, that they'll just work with chibis so long as I paint them in bright colors (Gorm, Spidicules, Sunstalker).

The ones in between are the roughest ones, but I'll just be making the calls one at a time as I go.

Awesome, I would love to see pics when you get around to taking them.

Also have you made some little chibi survivors?

I am assuming the lion is the lion from the impact miniatures range?

I have started on survivors, but we're currently playing a campaign of KDM with our chibis... and I'm having to work on the next monster with all of my hobby time just to keep up. I'll definitely finish them off (Survivor Candy is among them).

The Lion is the Impact! winged lion (it comes with parts to assemble it without wings). I re-sculpted his hands and turned his head farther than the mini normally goes (cut a little off and sculpt a little to make it fit).

Continuing my project to create a set of Kingdom Death: Monsters using chibi minis, here is my Screaming Antelope. I find that I really enjoy mixing the brutal nightmare setting of Kingdom Death with the cuteness of chibi minis.

He was created using mostly parts from Impact! Miniatures- the head started out as a chibi beastman, and the body came from a nightmare (one of the largest of their chibi pony miniatures). I sculpted the mouth and teeth in the belly, and moved the legs around to turn it into an antelope (and sculpted most of details to make up the difference).

I'll be posting up some of the nemesis monsters soon.

I definitely had to get me a complete chibi KD set.

For Thanksgiving, we finished off our Kingdom Death Monster campaign with an epic battle against the Watcher.

It was pretty glorious. We played with all the Chibi conversions of KDM minis I've made, and the survivors were all heroes from Super Dungeon Explore. Princess Ruby was pretty awesome with her bone darts and monster tooth necklace.

Now that I've admitted to finishing off more Kingdom Death Chibis than I've shown off, I figure I'd better get to posting them. Here's the Butcher:

And if you don't know what Kingdom Death: Monster is, you should probably have a look at the outstanding Kickstarter that they're running right now. The fact that it got to 3.5 million overnight is not overstating the quality of the game- it is fantastic on pretty much every level- brilliant minis, fantastic rules set, terrific art, crazy loads of fun.

I got the idea for the conversion one day when I realized that Impact!'s lion would make a brilliant White Lion to go with my Twilight Knight. But looking at that Chunin, I couldn't help but imagine turning him into the Butcher (even if it means putting horns on a generic chunin for my NAS set). From there, I've had to figure the rest of them out.

I had already decided to make a special base for the twilight knight that matches Kingdom Death. Origianlly, it was just one of the KD face bases, but I shortly realized that the faces were completely wrong for chibis, and all needed to be larger.

I had been making casts of my daughter's doll faces for normal KDM basing- I'd used the more normal proportioned ones, but I couln't help but notice that her Elsa and Anna dolls (and a few others) were proportioned perfect for large chibi faces.

Here is the Kingsman Nemesis:

And here is the Messenger of Humanity. The role of this mini in the game is a little odd. He was part of a set of scenarios that Adam Poots decided weren't working after a beta run. During the 1.5 Kickstarter, one of the promises made is that new rules will be made for all of the messengers.

Until then, he's being used to represent a survivor.

One day I will come, kidnap you and eat your brain. Maybe then I'll be able to paint/sculpt half as good as you do and then I will be amazaed at what I'll be doing.

End of the joke : as usual, sheer awesomeness...
