In the rules packet there is a Order of Operations for Combat. Within, it states if a primary defense is used and paid for, the flow of combat goes to the GUARD step followed by the RESOLVE HIT EFFECTS step and finally to the APPLY DAMAGE step with no indication of skipping over Armor calculation or Recover triggers.

However under the COMBAT ACTION TYPES section in the packet it states under GUARD "During the APPLY DAMAGE step, this damage ignores Armor and Recover effects do not resolve for the defender.

Am I looking too much into the wording? Does GUARD allow for further damage mitigation through only base Armor or Recover Traits, or does the unit simply take the rest of the halved damage on the chin?

Thank you for any help this new player can get.

The order of operations is like a roadmap, but you should still follow the written rule sections. In the case of guard, you give up all armor and recover, innate or otherwise. (Since high armor units that have guard would otherwise be immune to damage, which is why guard was changed to 1/2 damage in the first place.)

The Order of Operations step 9 is incorrect, in as much as it doesn't remind you there is no Recover or Armor if you used Guard. So yes for some attacks it's better not to Guard.

Excellent knowledge! Exactly what I expected would happen but I prefer confirmation from the more experienced gamers.
